
Major Renea Peterson
Director of Government Affairs
Major Renea Peterson has served as a criminal justice professional for 26 years. She began her career in 1998 with the Florida Department of Corrections as a corrections officer In Miami-Dade County, later earning a promotion to sergeant. Major Peterson joined the Broward Sheriff's Office in February of 2002, first working in the Department of Detention and then transferring to the Department of Law Enforcement.
While working her first patrol assignment in the City of Oakland Park, Major Peterson quickly learned the importance of grass-roots civic engagement. She has worked as an investigator in vice crimes, property crimes and gang investigations. She also had the opportunity to work as a Task Force Officer with the Department of Homeland Security in an undercover capacity.
Major Peterson earned a master's degree in Public Administration from Florida International University. She is certified as a General Instructor with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, specializing in several law enforcement and corrections disciplines. She also serves as a subject matter expert on various law enforcement topics for FDLE. Major Peterson is currently serving part-time as an adjunct instructor at the Broward College Institute of Public Safety providing training to law enforcement and corrections cadets. She has volunteered with several religious institutions locally and abroad, as well as various local charitable organizations and foundations.
Major Peterson is a member of several Law Enforcement Organizations, including IACP, NOBLE, NAWLEE, BCCPA, and FBI LEEDA. She currently serves on several boards and advisory committees for several local non-profit organizations, including The Broward County Racial Equity Task Force, Junior Achievement of South Florida, the Racial Equity Counsel for the Ft. Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, The Criminal Justice Review Board, The Dellenbach's Veterans organization and boards supporting mental health and wellness. She also serves as the Chair of the Broward Sheriff's Office Social Justice Task Force.
