Major Joe Achilarre started his law enforcement career in 1995 as a deputy with the Broward Sheriff's Office in the Deerfield Beach District. Since that time, he has served in many roles within BSO. He was a field training officer, a detective in the Gang Unit, and a sergeant in Patrol, Selective Enforcement and Criminal Investigations. In addition, he served as a section lieutenant in the Strategic Investigations Division, managing units that include Counter Terrorism, Homeland Security, Intelligence, Covert Surveillance and the Bomb Squad. Additionally, major Achilarre served as the executive officer of the Lauderdale Lakes/Central Broward District and the Strategic Investigations Division. Before being promoted to major, he was the Division of Internal Affairs and Public Corruption captain. Major Achilarre currently oversees the Strategic Investigations Division and the Child Protective Investigative Services.

Major Achilarre has a bachelor of public management degree from Florida Atlantic University. In addition, he is a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum Senior Management Program and both the University of Louisville Southern Police Institute's Command Officers Development Course and its Executive Leadership Program.
