Major David Ellwood's career in law enforcement is marked by significant achievements and a steady progression through the ranks. His journey began in his hometown with the Baltimore City Police Department in 1990, where he held various roles, including Patrol Officer, Narcotics Detective, and Violent Crimes Detective. Being a fifth-generation police officer, his dedication to law enforcement is deeply rooted in family tradition, tracing back to the late 1800s.

In 1997, Major Ellwood transitioned to the Broward Sheriff's Office, initially working in the Deerfield Beach district as a patrol deputy and later as a Property Crimes Detective. His expertise and commitment were further demonstrated when he moved to the Criminal Investigations Division in 2005, focusing on Sex Crimes and Missing Persons. His notable work in these areas led to his selection to Homicide Detective in 2007 and subsequently to Homicide Unit Supervisor in 2012, when he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Major Ellwood was promoted to Lieutenant in 2018, where he served as a Shift Commander for the Pompano Beach District. His strategic capabilities and administrative acumen were highlighted when he was appointed as the Executive Officer of the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport District in November 2018, and then promoted to Captain becoming the Airport District Chief in 2019.

In March 2024, he was promoted to Pompano Beach Region Major, overseeing the cities of Pompano Beach and Lauderdale by the Sea. Major Ellwood holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Management from Union Institute and University, and he is a graduate of the University of Louisville's Southern Police Institute, 88th Command Officers Development Course.

Major Ellwood is an active member of the Broward County Chiefs of Police Association (BCCPA), Florida Police Chiefs Association (FPCA), and International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).
