Technology and social media make getting and staying in touch with the outside world easier than ever, but it's important to know the RISKS. Review this information to help keep you safe!

Cyber Bulling

It's never okay to bully. Cyberbullying happens when you send, post or share content intending to harm someone. If you see cyberbullying occurring, don't "like" it or share it, save it and report it.

Sexting

Once an image or text is shared, it is out of your control. Use good judgment. Do not trust anyone pressuring you to share a sexually explicit image.

Sextortion

Sharing explicit images of yourself could lead to blackmail. In many cases, someone may demand additional images or money to prevent the release of the photos or videos on social media. Report sextortion to law enforcement.

Smartphones

Smartphones keep people connected, but they also leave you vulnerable to cyberbullying, sexting and sextortion. Be responsible and remain aware of the possible consequences of your actions.

Social Media

Social media connects us with our friends and family, but it also comes with risks. Stay away from anyone online who you don't know or trust. Be mindful when you post. Your online reputation also exists offline.

Livestreaming

Be careful, considerate and responsible when livestreaming. Although the video "disappears" after the stream, it can be recorded, saved and posted again later.

Gaming

Keep personal information private when gaming online. Never share credit card information or phone numbers. Know who you are playing with before entering a game.

Solicitation

BEWARE OF SEXUAL SOLICITATIONS Teens are in the age group most likely to receive sexual solicitations online. Always know who you are chatting with. If you are in an uncomfortable chat, log off and talk about it with an adult.

Posting

ESTABLISH A POSTING AGREEMENT Have an agreement with friends not to post embarrassing or hurtful comments or images of each other. Maintain a respectful, positive online environment.

Checklist

CHECK YOUR COMMENTS & IMAGES Do not post anything inappropriate or illegal, such as threats, nudity, alcohol or drugs. Many apps or websites make it easy to check, edit or delete past content.

Review

REVIEW ACCOUNT SETTINGS Continuously ask yourself, "What is on my profile, and who can see it?" Update and make any changes necessary to keep your profile private.

Followers

KNOW YOUR FRIENDS & FOLLOWERS Be sure you trust the people who can see, share and comment on what you post. Remember, when a friend or follower shares your content, it may be available to different users.

App Profile

KEEP AN EYE ON THIRD-PARTY APPS Logging in to one app using your account information from another app may allow access to your profile information. This information may be shared with other companies.

Devices

DON'T FORGET MOBILE DEVICES When you use mobile devices to post something or check in, you could also be sharing your location. This could put you or someone you are with at risk.

Report

YOUR RIGHT TO BE SAFE ONLINE If anyone cyberbullies you, shares a sexual message or image or asks you to share one, do not send, and report it to the website or app you are on. Tell your parent or a trusted adult.

Take Control!

By following these tips and strategies, you possess the tools to have a safer, more responsible and more enjoyable time online.
