In March 1992, Colonel Andrew Dunbar joined the Broward Sheriff's Office where he served as a Detention Deputy, In-service Instructor, and Drill Instructor with the Department of Detention. In 1996, Colonel Dunbar became cross-certified and was promoted to Patrol Deputy with the Department of Law Enforcement, where he was assigned to the Deerfield Beach District and became a Field Training Deputy. In January 2002, Colonel Dunbar was promoted to the rank of Sergeant where he was assigned to the Tamarac District. During this time, Colonel Dunbar served as a Patrol Sergeant and Detective Sergeant for the Selective Enforcement Team. In July 2006, Colonel Dunbar was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant serving as Patrol Commander in Dania Beach. After 4 months, he accepted the position of Executive Officer and relocated to the Central Broward District, where he served for approximately 4 years.
In August of 2010, Colonel Dunbar was assigned to Pompano Beach as the Executive Officer of Area One, which is one of the largest commands within the Department of Law Enforcement. In July 2011, Colonel Dunbar was promoted to the rank of District Captain and given the task of commanding two districts Lauderdale Lakes and Unincorporated Central Broward. In March of 2019, Colonel Dunbar was tasked with heading the Bureau of Human Resources as the Director. He was promoted to colonel in March 2023.
Colonel Dunbar is also part of the leadership group within the Sheriff's Office Quick Response Force leading numerous missions such as the Republican National Convention in Tampa Florida, a training mission to Kurdistan Iraq and hurricane relief in Bay County, Florida. He was also tasked as an adjunct instructor for the Training Division, developing and facilitating several leadership courses for supervisors. Colonel Dunbar earned a Master's Degree in Professional Studies from St. Thomas University with a concentration in Executive Management.
